Toyota Emerges as World's Top-Selling Carmaker for Sixth Straight Year
The Japanese automotive powerhouse reported Thursday that total deliveries—including its Hino Motors and Daihatsu subsidiaries—climbed 4.6% from the previous year to reach 11.32 million units in 2025. Manufacturing output similarly surged 5.7% to 11.22 million vehicles despite ongoing semiconductor supply constraints.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen saw deliveries contract 0.5% to 8.98 million vehicles as the German automaker grappled with deteriorating conditions in the Chinese marketplace and tariff-related headwinds dampening North American consumer appetite.
Toyota's commanding lead—exceeding 11 million units—represents a decisive victory in the intensifying battle for global automotive supremacy, with the gap between first and second place now stretching to over 2.3 million vehicles.
Hybrid powertrains fueled the record-breaking performance, with gasoline-electric models representing 42% of worldwide deliveries. Battery-electric vehicles, by contrast, contributed just 1.9% to total sales.
The automaker posted modest but significant progress in China, where sales edged up 0.2%—the company's first annual expansion in that crucial market since 2021.
U.S.-bound shipments from Japanese factories jumped 14.2% to roughly 615,000 units, propelled by robust consumer demand for the RAV4 crossover and other popular sport-utility models.
