U.S. Strikes Iranian Radar Sites, Iran Vows Retaliation

(MENAFN) The U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that American forces carried out what it described as "self-defense strikes" against Iranian radar installations and drone command-and-control facilities across parts of Iran over the weekend.

The operations, executed across both Saturday and Sunday, were triggered by what the command characterized as "aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters," according to a post on X.

"U.S. fighter aircraft swiftly responded by eliminating Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters," the command added.

Tehran wasted no time retaliating. Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Monday that it had struck the air base from which U.S. forces launched an assault on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island, declaring all predetermined targets fully destroyed, according to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency.

The IRGC issued a stark warning alongside the announcement: if the aggression is repeated, the response will be completely different in scale and nature, and full responsibility for any such escalation will rest with the United States.

The exchange of strikes unfolds against a tense diplomatic backdrop. Iran and the United States are reportedly in advanced stages of finalizing a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending a war that erupted on Feb. 28 with coordinated strikes by Washington and Israel against Tehran.

A temporary ceasefire took hold on April 8, and in the weeks since, both sides have traded multiple proposals outlining terms for a permanent resolution to the conflict — with Pakistan serving as the key mediating party.
